Traffic Information on the Top Websites

The longtail, for those that do not know, is the name for the millions of websites that make up most of the Internet. The top 100 websites receive a significant proportion of Internet traffic but there are many more websites which perhaps receive only one visit a year. Look at the figures below detailing the traffic numbers for the most popular websites.

- To be the number 1 website in the world you need more than 540 million visits per month.

- To be a top 10 website you need at least 230 million visitors per month.

- To be a top 50 website you need at least 41 million visitors per month.

- To be a top 100 website you need at least 22 million visitors per month.

- To be a top 500 website you need at least 7.4 million visitors per month.

- To be a top 1,000 website you need at least 4.1 million visitors per month.

What is even more amazing is that this data is only for unique visitors. A website in the top 1,000 will have less than 1% of the traffic of the most popular website. Although Internet traffic reports are often found to be inaccurate, the figures can be taken seriously.

This means that information overload is a genuine problem for Internet users. There are countless of sites on the web – more than you could ever be able to visit in a life time. We have visited websites that we will not visit again but there are a lot of sites that we rarely visit but often attempt to find again sometime later. Thus, many websites have sprung up to offer solutions to this problem. Bookmark services allow you to save favorites online! Furthermore, so much time is wasted re-registering for a website you have already registered for, simply because you cannot remember your username and password details. There are many web based password managers which will allow you to manage your account details. So when you try to find a website again, you will not have to spend hours searching for it!

Although the amount of websites may often appear daunting when trying to find something specific, search engines are great at filtering out less relevant websites. However, you may also find many sites and services that allow you to browse the web more effectively. The Internet need not be difficult to use though; there are numerous tools to bookmark your favorites and manage your passwords. You may be able to access these services through one easy to use personal online homepage or account. Whilst most people can effectively use the most popular websites, navigating your way through the longtail is often more challenging. Using the numerous available services often makes browsing easier to deal with.
